I Am a Big Dinosaur (Barron's Little Animal Series)
Published in Hardcover by Barrons Juveniles (September, 1989)
Author: Francois Crozat
Average review score:

Small in size but good in content
This is a cute book. Although the size of the book is somewhat small, it has an imaginative story of a dinosaur living during our time and how he would not fit in very well. A Good book.

Excellent "friendly" dinosaur book
This was my kids' introduction to dinosaurs, and it was an excellent way to introduce them in a non-threatening way. The brontosaurus of the title is friendly, cute and peaceful. The book does, though, show a good range of other dinosaurs, like allosaurs and triceratops. The book doesn't go into depth, but what it does it does right.

I Am a Little Whale (Barron's Little Animal Series)
Published in Hardcover by Barrons Juveniles (February, 1995)
Author: Francois Crozat
Average review score:

for classrooms
I bought this book to add to my collection of books on oceans for my classroom. The book is very informative and has great illustrations. However, the little hard back in only about the size of the palm of my hand which makes it difficult in the classroom for me to read it to them because they want to see the pictures and it gets lost in the scuffle of classroom use.

A wonderful story through the eyes of a baby whale
My husband purchased this book at the store when ten month old son wouldn't put it down. It remains his favorite book after six months! The story is told from the viewpoint of a baby whale, who accurately and simply tells of his life in the great ocean. The pictures are complex and true-to-life, well drawn, and holds the full attention of my very active toddler. The book focuses both on the actions of the sea creatures in the story as well as the feelings of the baby whale through his experiences with his mother whale.

My son loves this story and sits completely still on my lap, pointing to all of the colorful sea creatures and turning the pages. I love the size of the book, which is tall and easy for toddlers to grab.

The complexity of thought and feeling found within this book is amazing in what is essentially a toddler board book. I think this book will last for at least a few years to come.

J.R.R. Tolkien's the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings (Barrons Book Notes)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 1986)
Authors: Anne M. Pienciak and J. R. R. Tolkien
Average review score:

A review of the notes not the book.
The first thing J.R.R. Tolkien says is that this is not parity or an allegory. He emphasizes that this has no relation to the war or any particular place.

The First thing that Barron's notes does is say the ring is like the atomic bomb. And the land influences the landscape after the war.

Some of the things in the book are useful for pointing out what is assumed you already know about; like shadows are bad and stars are good. As for the story it is just the bare bones with no meat. If you read this first you would be discouraged form reading the book thinking it was long and dry.

Fantastic fantasy adventure. Holds your interest for hours.
An almost believable fantasy adventure that will make you not want to put the book down. If you have an imagination this book will make you feel as if you are on the journey with them. The characters, events and places are so vividly described for the imagination that you can almost picture them and what they might actually look like. You will wish you yourself were really a part of Middle Earth after reading this epic adventure tale.

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (December, 1989)
Authors: Jane Austen and Morris E. Speare
Average review score:

Excellent renderings of human natures
The Best of Jane Austen's works, this novel of 18th century England evokes a wide range of emotions. The heroine is an admirable young gentlewoman not without flaws. Countering her flaws is a sheaf of rock solid virtues. Revolving around Miss Elizabeth Bennet is a varied cast of characters. Her interactions with them teach her much. The lessons she learns are timeless. I found the politeness and decorum displayed by even the meanest of the characters a welcome relief from the coarseness casually offered today. I expect to offer this book to my daughter when she's a little older.

Essential
Jane Austen's masterpiece: a kaleidoscope of beauty and style, this is Austen at her very best. "I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print", Austen concedes about Elizabeth Bennet, and centuries of readers worldwide will agree. The delightfully proud and disdainful Mr. Darcy is a literary hero of the first degree, and the subtle relationship between these two characters is intellectual romance that will quietly thrill all who appreciate Miss Austen's unmatched skill

The Joy of Chocolate (Barron's "Joy Of" Cookbooks)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (October, 1989)
Author: Judith Olney
Average review score:

Check out the chocolate mousse recipe, worth the whole book!
A pal of mine gave me this book as a Christmas present a few years ago; and in my intermittent waves of cooking frenzy vs. dieting I regret to say I've only tried one recipe. It is, however, so killer that it's worth what she paid for the book. It's called "Kit's Chocolate Mousse" and is the ultimate mousse for those of us who like it thick and frothy [unlike pudding, which is gooey and drippy.] You can both gain weight and salivate just reading the ingredients, including [brace yourself] 2 cups of heavy cream and 6 eggs.

If I ever get around to the rest of the book, I'll start with the recipe for Mexican chocolate. The photography is excellent, the layout is charming, and the recipes only for the serious chocolate lover.

Serious Cook & 10 Year User of this book
I've been using this book since it was first published in 1989 and have tried nearly every recipe. All are uniformly excellent and beautiful, sucessful and extremely satisfying. Its one of those cookbooks that is so well written and researched that you keep going back to it time after time, completely sure of success. I have presented these desserts at countless dinner parties. They range from the dramatic cabbage shaped chocolate cake and chocolate sack with apricot creamand fresh fruits to the comforting: the very best, easiest brownie recipe and the simple, rich mexican hot chocolate. Honestly, The book is worth it just for this brownie recipe. If I could only choose five cookbooks to keep for the rest of my life, this would certainly be one of them. Buy it, and cook from it.

Keys to Your Child's Healthy Sexuality (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (April, 1998)
Authors: Chrystal De Freitas, Chrystal De Freitas, and Chrystal DeFreitas
Average review score:

Solid information for nervous parents
This isn't my favorite "sex ed" book for parents, but it's up near the top. Chrystal DeFreitas does a good job breaking information into logical and readable chunks, and topics are arranged logically by both major subject and age group.

I particularly like the emphasis the author puts on parent-child communication, and on using everyday events as "teachable moments" in the overall sexuality education of the child. She encourages parents to have many small, informal talks with the child, rather than "the talk" -- which is almost universally embarrassing and ineffective for both parent and child.

I do feel that some of the sections (such as "privacy vs. secrecy" and the single-parent material) represent wishful thinking rather than the realities of parenting for many of us. However, this doesn't mean the information isn't useful; just that I think it should be taken with a grain of salt, and that additional resources are always useful in filling gaps in any particular work.

I would recommend DeFreitas' book to any parent who has ever stuttered or mumbled in answer to their child's questions about sexuality. She gives many positive examples of tactics parents can use to teach, while encouraging them to supply their own personal and moral beliefs (something many authors forget to mention).

Nice & easy-to-use ideas for talking to our kids about sex.
I like the easy-to-read, gentle, mater-of-fact style of this book. Besides practical, easy-to-use ideas for talking to my children about sex, there were some nice reminders for me about good parenting and communication. I really liked the "time-in" idea for parents and their children. I tend to get nervous when thinking about talking to my children about sex; reading this book I could feel my tension ease as I thought, "Of course, that's a good way to put it. I could say that."

Lake Tanganyikan Cichlids: Everything About Purchasing, Care, Nutrition, Behaviour, and Aquarium Maintenance (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 1998)
Author: Mark Smith
Average review score:

Good assessment concerning many aspects of these fishes
Barrons in general, does a great job in presenting thier information in a concise and clear manner. Even beginners will have no problem following along in this 'pocket reference' publication. Do not let the price or size of the book sway you. It is packed with all of the pertenent information. Tanganikan cichlids are wonderful fishes and barrons does an excellent job of intoducing all of the husbandry techniques needed to keep these fish happy and healthy. One drawback is that more experienced aquarists or ichthyologists might find the book lacking in some of the detailed areas. Although overall, you pretty much can't go wrong when purchasing this book

Good overall info. Great pictures!
Mr. Smith covered all the bases with this book. From giving an educational step by step way to set up and maintain an African cichlid tank. he offers good quality pictures of a wide variety of fish with a very informational care and breeding for each fish. I recommend this book to all interested in keeping these fish.

MAXnotes for Twelfth Night (MAXnotes)
Published in Paperback by Research & Education Assn (September, 1996)
Authors: Research, Education Association Staff, and Frederic Kolman
Average review score:

MAX notes for Twelfth Night
This book was helpful when taking a class involving the play. The synopsis at the end was very helpful in understanding the plot. The questions at the end helped me to further enjoy the complex story and get its full meaning. If you appreciate reading other's comments about this book you will thoroughly appreciate this book.

A helpful addition
I started using Maxnotes as a beginning teacher, a few years back, so that I could catch up on some novels that I had never read in college. I was under the gun and had to provide lesson plans in 3 days on 5 novels I didn't know. Maxnotes saved me.

Now, some time later, I find myself referring back to those books and buying more of them. Am I still under the gun? No. These books, unlike like those charming ones from my college days, are well organized, insightful, and show a clear understanding of literary device.

I have found them so useful that I recommend them to teachers (both new and experienced). They provide perspectives I had never thought of, helpful questions, and practice essays I find myself using again and again.

This series is simply the most helpful and concise tool I have ever found. I have even taken to recommending this book to my students. I know bad teacher. However, using this text breakdown and summary along with side by side texts my students have improved their short and long term understanding of literature by remarkable amounts.

Dollar for dollar you can not go wrong with any of these books.

The Old Man And The Sea (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (December, 2000)
Author: Jeanne Salladé Criswell
Average review score:

Long, but detailed.
"Cliffsnotes Hemingway's the Old Man and the Sea" are decent, but at times very long, but that is because of the detail. If you need to understand the symbolism, then these CliffsNotes are a must! As always, you should read the CliffsNotes AFTER you have read "The Old Man and the Sea." I recommmend.

Old Man and the Sea
I think that these cliff notes realy helped me in my report. They made everything clear when after I read the book. I bought a used edition and it was clean and nice. I really think that whoever needs cliff notes at a low price should come her to buy them!! Besides, this is a really good book!!

Plato's the Republic (Barron's Book Notes)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (April, 1985)
Authors: Plato and Jane Yarbrough
Average review score:

Good to have... could be better though.
This is a good helper to make it through Plato's Republic. However, some of the most important parts (e.g. the abolition of the family and the equality of women) are skipped over. Also, the term paper ideas are not very original... most college students could come up with these ideas on their own. But, it does help if you have trouble interpreting the Socratic dialogs. For the price, it's a good deal.

The grandfather of all political theory.
It has been said that all political theory books are meer footnotes to Plato's masterpiece, the Republic. This is probably true on a descriptive scale. Plato puts forth the basic essentials of any and all forms of government and the men who support it. He laid the groundworks for generations of philosophers, government officials, and nations. However, Plato's idea of the utopian state is rather flawed and impractical. He preaches the dissolustion of private property, sharing of all possesions (including women and children!), censorship, a class system, and rule by philosopher kings. But he also brings forth ideas that were well ahead of their time, such as equal rights for women, monotheist beliefs, free and public education, education techniques, and more. Anyone interested in politics and the nature of society should read this book as a basis for exploration of this wide and interesting field.
